In a move we can only describe as “inevitable,” Disney has announced an end date for its partnership with Netflix in order to pursue a streaming service of its own.
Starting at the beginning of the 2019 calendar year, Disney will end its distribution-for-streaming agreement with the Big Red N, forcing the streaming giant to Let It Go in favor of a “new Disney-branded service.”
The announcement comes just over year after Netflix’s original deal with the entertainment ultracorp was began to pay off, with the streaming service securing exclusive movies from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar in the US.
Disney’s streaming service plans to launch in 2019, a year after its ESPN-branded sports streaming service debuts in 2018.
In addition to new movies like the Lion King live-action remake, Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2, the Disney streaming service also plans to include original movies, TV programming, and shorts — as well as past Disney and Pixar movies, alongside content from The Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD.
While a major blow to Netflix’s own library, (goodbye Captain America: Civil War, we hardly knew ye) we speculate other services may soon become bereft of Disney-owned content going forward in the near future as well — in other words, go marathon Disney XD’s Gravity Falls on Hulu if you still can!
